The use of Flagyl in pregnant women is not recommended as this may lead to its effect in the developing fetus. The drug should be used in the first trimester of pregnancy only when necessary.
The drug is not indicated in children and adolescents below 10 years. The drug should not be used in children and adolescents below 6 years of age in the dose and duration as advised by the paediatrician.
Dosage and Posology
The recommended dosage of Flagyl for the treatment of infections in the elderly is 2.5 mg/day, 5 mg/day, 10 mg/day, and 20 mg/day, divided into two doses. The duration of treatment is 2 days. The usual adult dosage is 1.25 mg/kg/day, given twice a day for 8 to 12 weeks. In case of severe gastrointestinal disease or signs and symptoms of liver impairment, the dosage should be reduced to 1.5 mg/kg/day, given twice a day for 4 to 6 weeks. In case of signs and symptoms of liver failure such as yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, jaundice, dark urine, abdominal pain or dark urine, the dosage should be reduced to 5 mg/day, given twice a day for 4 to 6 weeks. In severe hepatic failure, Flagyl should be stopped and a second treatment course of antibiotics, e.g. erythromycin, clarithromycin, etc., should be started (see DOSAGE section). The most common adverse reactions (in the majority of cases) are gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhoea, flatulence, and abdominal pain. The signs and symptoms of jaundice are: yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, jock itch, and sometimes itch, which is a red rash covering the entire body. Jock itch usually disappears within 2 weeks of discontinuing Flagyl.
